Animal Care Samos - Zoofiloi Samou
English Version Deutsche Version
Spaying and Neutering of the strays are an important part of our work on Samos.
Only extensive campaigns ensure a long term decrease in the strays' population and will bring at least a relief to the situation.

Up to now we are working with the Worldwide Veterinary Fund, a british organization consiting of veterinarians and veterinarian nurses who voluntarily travel around the world for various animal care projects. These projects are, like may others, partly financed by Greek Animal Rescue, another part is payed by the vets themselves!

During their first stay on Samos mainly the inmates of our shelter were neutered. On the second visit we tried mainly to reach privately owned dogs and cats.
That might sound weird at first but there are good reasons for it:
 1. there is no possibility to have a dog or cat neutered on Samos , and doing it in Athens is very expensive
 2. It's often the "private" dogs and cats whose unwanted puppies are set out in the wild and then become a stray problem.

You cannot ask for too much responsibility on the holders' side, therefore we think it makes most sense to have their animals neutered for free if it has to be.
However, often the owners left donations that at least paid a bit for the plane tickets of our vets.
During the last season we were able to have more than 100 dogs and cats spayed or neutered!

Also the officially responsible authority TEDK had organized a team from Athens that came for a wekend and did another 20 dogs.

This is a great success for the first year of our operation; however: Only if we can get 3-4 veterinarian temas to Samos for at least one week each over a period of some year we will have a chance to reach a noticeable decrease in the population of stray animals.

By the way: The vets of the Worldwide Veterinary Fund wrote a nice report on their last visit to Samos that describes well their work here.
You can read it here.
