Animal Care Samos to an end

Animal Care Samos to an end

The shelter of Animal Care Samos closed down after 13 years.
The 13 is a controversial number. For some people it might refer to a certain jinx while it could also have a meaning like happiness.
For us this number marks the 13 years of our activities and energy that we have put in Animal Care Samos.
13 years where we were confronted with abused and abandoned animals, with preconceptions and negative gossip due to the ignorance of people.

But above all, 13 years full of love, unconditional love from all the animals that succeeded in the process of giving them a better future.

We are glad to tell that we made sure all animals have found a place. The last few months we worked hard to live up to this. We had our reasons for the sake of the animals to do this in a quit way. We can understand that people are shocked to hear but we hope you understand that this was necessary to bring all the animals with us.

Every action or happening always has two sides. The positive and the negative.

The positive side is that we have been able to do the things that was the most important, taking care of animals who needed us. This meant we were able to give more than 4000 stray dogs a loving home. We have neutered over 17.000 cats and dogs . We could never have done this without the help from all the vets and volunteers from all over the world who we are still very grateful for. During the years we did notice a small change in the mentality of some people towards the animals. We have put a lot of time and energy into the campaign to treat animals well. We have been to schools and different places on the island to educate about this topic. It wasn’t always easy to find the time to do this cause we had to do this next to the ‘normal’ work which contained taking care of all the animals in the shelter. But we realized that this was an important task because only by changing the people we could help the animals better. The situation with the stray animals became more stable over the years and the number of animals on the streets dropped. The list of different activities that involve this job is very long and the work never stops.

It isn’t just a hobby or a 9 to 5 job, it is a dedication of your life for 7 days a week, 24 hours. And we have always given ourselves for the full 100% to do all these tasks that are necessary to run this shelter. Unfortunately we didn’t only had to deal with witnessing the cruelty that people can do to animals but the local government made the work even harder by their rules and their bureaucracy. Instead of receiving help since we were helping them with their problem we had to deal with even more problems since their rules made the work even harder including the fact that it became more difficult to put animals up for adoption. We never wanted just to ‘collect’ animals since you don’t help the animals by doing this, we wanted them to have a better life. This was only possible when people were able to adopt them. The local government of Samos did not help or support us as they should have done according to the Greek legislation on the protection of stray animals, citing an alibi or lack of staff or lack of money.

There were endless new problems and obstructions with the government ,municipality, airport and borders.

We tried but their was never willingness of the municipality/government to start a practice for injured animals and animals in really bad condition.

People wondered how we were able to manage all this financially. Not because we were receiving money from the government but all due to donations of people who did supported us. The country and the society have always benefit from our work. No tourist likes to be confronted with animal cruelty on the streets and it was us who took the big responsibility to deal with this problem. At the same time it is the local people who often still refuse to neuter their pets, yet bringing constantly (sick) puppies to us. It is the people who buy dogs to go hunting with while a lot of those dogs end up on the streets when the owners are disappointed in their hunting skills.

It is the people who want a special breed dog from Athene’s without thinking how much work this involves and dump the poor dog after a short period. We always took care of all those animals all though the background information made us very sad and frustrated.
But you come to a point when it is enough and nobody can deal with this situation for too long. We hope with all our hearts that this will also be a turning point for the people and the local government on Samos. Let this open their eyes and realize something need to be changed.

We are all part of the same system, we share the same planet and we breathe the same air. Hopefully people will realize this and it will lead to a life where people ,animals and nature can live in harmony.
With lots of love, team Animal Care Samos.

οικονομικά σε όλα αυτό το δύσκολο έργο που προσφέραμε;
